Longue Vue’s mission
“To preserve and use the historical and artistic legacy of Longue Vue and its creators to educate and inspire people to pursue beauty and civic responsibility in their lives.”
Longue Vue was the primary residence of philanthropists and civic leaders, Edith and Edgar Stern. The Sterns founded Dillard University and the Flint-Goodridge teaching hospital for African-Americans, worked on voter registration reform, among many efforts. Mr. and Mrs. Stern are the only couple to have been separately awarded the Times-Picayune Loving Cup, one of the highest civic honors in New Orleans.
The Sterns believed that all sectors of the community must play an active role in creating opportunity and a better quality of life for its citizenry. During their lifetime, Longue Vue was a hub of social and civic discourse. Today, Longue Vue seeks to fulfill its mission by providing facilities to non-profit organizations, civic groups and businesses for the purpose of coming together to meet, discuss, brainstorm, and strategize on ways to enhance the quality of life for our community.
According to the American Association of Museums, Accreditation Program Standards, an “Accreditable Museum”:
-
Identifies the communities it serves and makes appropriate decisions in how it serves them;
-
Strives to be inclusive and offers opportunities for diverse participation;
-
Asserts its public service roles and places education at the center of that role; and,
-
Demonstrates a commitment to providing the public with physical and intellectual access to the museum and its resources.
Longue Vue’s historic facilities are sure to inspire you to pursue civic responsibility in your lives.
