Native Now: “The Wooded Swamp”
Saturday, February 6
8, 9, 10, and 11 a.m.
Learn about the native plants of Louisiana, which are better adapted to the extreme conditions of our area. These sessions take place in the Wild Garden, a garden devoted to featuring native plants in an idealized setting. After each presentation, participants will receive a complimentary native plant. This program is free, thanks to a generous grant from the Greater New Orleans Foundation Environmental Fund, but reservations are required. A swamp is a unique bottomland habitat that is frequently flooded but with enough drainage to support woody vegetation. The defining tree of the Louisiana swamp is the exquisitely adapted Bald Cypress. From Wild Rice to the bright vermillion flowers of the Swamp Red Maple, there are many and varied close associates of Bald Cypress, and many are suitable for your garden!
Cost: Free

“Expanded Perspectives: Pontchartrain Park + Gentilly Woods Landscapes” Closing Reception
February 21
3 – 5 p.m.
In 2007, Longue Vue hosted a four-day design studio that focused on landscape revitalization proposals for the New Orleans neighborhoods of Pontchartrain Park and Gentilly Woods. Participants included UVA and LSU landscape architecture graduate students who worked on their projects for the course of a semester. Their efforts, featured in Pontchartrain Park + Gentilly Woods Landscape Manual, are further explored in this exhibit that showcases their design drawings. To learn more about this project, download your free copy of the Landscape Manual. The exhibit ends on February 21 with a Closing Reception.
