Community Education

Neighborhood groups, organizations and volunteers are leading the revitalization of our communities and city. Guided by its mission "to educate and inspire people to pursue beauty and civic responsibility in
their lives," Longue Vue is an active member of the Pontilly Disaster Collaborative, a community group dedicated to revitalizing the sister neighborhoods of Pontchartrain Park and Gentilly Woods. Through the
collaborative efforts of the PDC, these historic neighborhoods will re-invigorate their community green space, rebuild their homes, design community schools, and recreate the strong neighborhood connections that have existed for over fifty years.

The Pontchartrain Park + Gentilly Woods Neighborhood Design Weekend was a collaboration between Longue Vue Gardens and the Pontilly Disaster Collaborative. Pontchartrain Park was developed in large part by Longue Vue’s owners, Edith and Edgar Stern. The first planned community accessible to middle-class and professional African-Americans in segregated New Orleans, the neighborhood became a launching ground for prominent activists, politicians, and civic leaders. Pontchartrain Park represents the Sterns’ commitment to civil rights, and it is also evidence of their concern for landscape design: its beautiful streets, gardens, and public spaces have always been an essential part of its identity.

Cultivating Communities

Since Spring 2001, this collaboration between Longue Vue and the Waldo Burton Memorial School has provided middle and high school students the opportunity to develop philanthropy, horticulture and entrepreneurship skills. Throughout the spring, WBMS students engage in a series of plantings, garden-based activities, projects and discussions. The students grow their own produce at Longue Vue to sell at the Crescent City Farmer's Market. The proceeds from their sales are then donated to a charitable organization of their choice. Past recipients are: Habitat for Humanity, Spina Bifida Association of Greater New Orleans, and Children's Hospital.

Summer Witness

In 1985, Longue Vue House and Gardens began its partnership with the Archdiocese of New Orleans to offer learning experiences to underserved children ages 4 to 18 in the archdiocesan Summer Witness Program. Participants benefit from academic, recreational, and cultural activities designed to strengthen awareness, offer exposure, and keep young minds active during the summer.
