Feature: The Camellia Walk at Longue Vue

(featured photo) C. Japonica ‘Royal Velvet’ (1987)

The Camellia Walk features over 100 different varieties of this much-beloved Southern adoptee. A favorite plant of the Sterns, Camellias are the only permitted non-natives in the Wild Garden. Although, the peak of the camellia display spans from late December through late February, there are still several buds on many of the plants and many late blooming varieties that will continue to delight visitors through March and the advent of spring.

The deep burgundy red blooms of this 1983 variety are set off wonderfully by the red and white petaloids that intermingle with its stamens.

(C. reticulata x C. japonica)

Enormous and lush, soft medium pink blooms mark this reticulata hybrid from 1979.

This lovely non-reticulata hybrid was developed in New Zealand in 1975.

Camellia japonica
‘Rosea Superba’

(Camellia japonica)

Superb, indeed. The history of this antique variety (1843) is mysterious and murky. We do know she came from England originally.

Camellia japonica ‘Simeon’

(Camellia japonica)

This 1950 variety originated in nearby Gulfport, MS and is one of the original specimens planted in the Wild Garden.
