Poinsettia

(Euphorbia pulcherrima)

Called “poinsettias” after Joel Poinsett, the first United States ambassador to Mexico (appointed by Andrew Jackson in the 1820s). Poinsett brought cuttings of the colorfully bracted shrub back to his South Carolina greenhouse and so introduced this most popular holiday plant to our country.
